The family deity of this poet is Lord Narasimha, who was an avatar of Lord Mahavishnu. Lord Narasimha emerged from Kamba (pillar) to save the child devotee Prahlada from his father`s attack, who was an `Asura` and hated Lord Vishnu. So, the devoted parents of Kamban named him after the name of `Kamba`.
Though Valmiki Ramayana does not contain Sri Narasimhaavatara episode, how in Kamba Ramayana, based on Valmiki's, this episode came about? Since Kambar hailed from this place where in the temple Prahalada graces along with the Lord, Kambar could not sing his epic without Prahalada.
when Kambar (the Tamil Ramayana historian) asked for inclusion of a small stanza of Narasimha avataram in the Ramayana. A few of the scholars had objected to this inclusion.
Narasimha acceded with a loud laughter the argument of kamban Leading to shaking of the whole place violently completely . The Shaken assembly Bowed to Kamban's Greatness
Kamba Ramayanam was composed here at Tiruvottiyur Chennai , before it was recited at Sri Rangam, Trichy
