Foolish Tree

Long ago, two trees lived in peace and friendship in a forest which was full of wild beasts. Lions and tigers roamed freely in the forest and preyed on other animals. (According to the survival principle of this material world, "jivo jivasya jivanam"). After they had had their fill, they left the carcasses behind causing a foul stench all round. The forest was reeking with the smell. One day the first tree told the second tree 'Friend, these animals are such a nuisance! I feel suffocated by the smell. "The other tree also agreed that it was becoming difficult to live there. The first tree said "I can't bear it any longer. I'll drive these animals away." The second tree said, "Oh, No! Please don't! The wild animals protect us and keep men away!" But the first tree was determined. It said," But just imagine, how pleasant and pure the air will be. I'll do it. I'll drive them away." But the first tree was worried about the consequences. One night, shortly afterwards there was a strong breeze blowing and the first tree took this opportunity and it shook vigorously making a loud noise which awakened the animals sleeping beneath it. They were afraid to see the wild swaying of the tree and concluded that the tree is possessed and they all decided to run away from that place. The next morning none of the animals were to be seen and the first tree said "At last, I've got rid of those animals! Already, the air smells fresher."

Many days passed.  Quiet and peace reigned in the forest. Then one day a cowherd boy passed that way chasing his calf which had run to this area of the forest. The boy was afraid that anytime a tiger may pounce upon him. But to his surprise he found that there were no animal footprints anywhere around. He went home and told his family about the discovery. The next day some of the villagers came there to look at this place and found that it will be easy for them to fell the trees there since there was no disturbance by wild animals. The second tree who was all the while observing this, then told the first tree, "You see what they are planning?  I had told you to let the wild beasts alone. "The first tree retorted" Don't be silly. I can frighten those men away, as I did the beasts." The tree again shook itself violently making a loud sound. The men weer not very much moved and they said that it is only the breeze rustling through the leaves. The tree tried again to shake more violently. Then one of the men suggested" Oh! it's nothing to worry about. We will cut down these trees and the wood will be useful for us."  At that point, the first tree became fearful and it pleaded to the second tree to help him. Then the second tree told him that it was too late and he had to bear the consequences of his action and that was the end of the tree.

The tree's plans to drive away one miserable condition caused by the wild beasts, led the tree into another more miserable condition of being cut down by men.

Prahlad Maharaj says in this connection (SB 7.9.17) :

yasmaat priyaapriya-viyoga-samayoga-janma-
shokaagninaa sakala-yonishu dahyamaanaḥ
dukhaushadham tad api duhkham atad-dhiyaaham
bhuman bhramaami vada me tava daasya-yogam

"O great one, O Supreme Lord, because of combination with pleasing and displeasing circumstances and because of separation from them, one is placed in a most regrettable position, within heavenly or hellish planets, as if burning in a fire of lamentation. Although there are many remedies by which to get out of miserable life, any such remedies in the material world are more miserable than the miseries themselves. Therefore I think that the only remedy is to engage in Your service. Kindly instruct me in such service."

"Is your God everywhere?"

"Yes, father," answered the boy Prahlad.

"Is he in this pillar also?" asked the king, pointing to a nearby pillar of his court.

"Yes, Sire, he is everywhere," said Prahlad.

"Then let him come out," saying this the king struck the pillar with his sword.

YamASTaka

(NarasiMha PurANa 9)

vyAsa uvAca
sva puruSam abhivIkSya pAZa hastaM
vadati yamaH kila tasya karNe mUle
parihara madhusUdana prapannAn
prabhur aham anya nRnAm na vaiSNavAnAm /1

Vyasa said: Yama having seen his servant ready to move somewhere with the pasa (cord) in his hand, said into his ears - ‘Dear messenger, my sovereignty covers the creatures other than Vaisnavas. Hence, leave the people sheltered under Lord Madhusudana.‘

aham amaragaNArcitena dhAtrA
yama iti lokahitAhitena yuktaH
hari guru vimukhAn praZAsmi martyan
hari caraNa praNatAn namaskaremi /2

Lord Brahma has employed me for taking into consideration the account of the good and bad deeds performed/commited by the people, and thus, addressed me as Yama. Only the people not obedient/devoted to the teacher and Visnu are governed by me. I myself salute the people who bow their heads before the lotus feet of Sri Hari.

sugatim abhilaSAmi vAsudevA
daham api bhAgavate sthitAntarAtmA
madhu vadhavaZago ‘smi na svatantraH
prabhavati samyamane mamApi kRSNaH /3

By taking special care for the devotee towards God and on remembering their penance performed, I also wish to a suitable position from Lord Vasudeva. I am enslaved to Madhusudana and nowhere independent. Lord Krsna is capable enough to control me.

bhagavati vimukhasya nAsti siddhir
viSam amRtam bhavatIti nedamasti
varSa Zatam apIha pacyamAnaM
vrajati na kAncanatAmayaH kadAcit /4

The person opposing God cannot achieve siddhi (salvation). The poison cannot anyway turn into nectar, the iron cannot be converted into gold even if the same is thrown into a furnace for many hundred years.

na hi ZaZi kaluSa cchaviH kadAcit
viramati no ravitAm upaiti candraH
bhagavati ca harAv ananya cetA
bhRZa-malino 'pi virAjate manuSyaH /5

The moon similarly cannot be absolved from the scare [scar?], i.e. it cannot illumine like the sun. However, the exclusive devotee of Lord Visnu attains to honour and prestige in spite of being dirty in body.

mahad suvicArya lokatattvaM
bhagavad upAsti mRte na siddhir asti
suraguru sudRDha prasAdadau tau
hari caranau smaratApavarga hetoH /6

On going over the essence of the world it is only ascertained that no achievement can be obtained but by the worship of God. You are therefore advised to bring constantly in memory the feet of God for emancipation as these feet had graced the devaguru (Brhaspati).

Zubham idam upalabhya mAnuSatvaM
sukRta Zatena vRthendriyArtha hetoH
ramayati kurute na mokSa mArga
dahayati candanam AZu bharam ahetoH /7

The people indulge redundantly in the pleasures of wordly affairs, only to destroy the opportunity for utilisation of human body so received as a result of hundreds of great deeds performed in the phase of previous life. The people not following the path of emancipation act as if someone pumps air to the sandalwood for getting its ashes.

mukulita kara kuDmalaiH surendraiH
satata namaskRta pAda paNkajo yaH
avihata gataye sanAtanAya
jagati janim harate namo ‘grajAya /8

Ceaseless salutations to Sanatana Purusa, Lord Visnu, who destroys the cycle of birth and death, whose ever dynamic paces do not know rest and whose lotus feet are worshiped with clasped hands by devas.

yamASTakam idam punyam

Vyasa said: The person either going over or listening to this sacred Yamastaka attains to the abode of Visnu and all his vices are absolved.

itIdam uktam yama vAkyam uttamaM
mayAdhunA te hari bhavita varddhanam
punaH pravakSyAmi purAtanIm katham
bhRgos tu pautreNa ca yA purA kRtA /10

This great preaching of Yama which increases devotion to Lord Visnu has been described by me to you all. Now, I will again highlight the precedent story i.e. the activities performed by Markandeya, the grandson of Bhrgu, in the ancient period.

iti ZrI narasiMhapurANe navamo ‘dhyAyaH /9

Thus ends the ninth chapter on Yamastaka in Sri Nrsimha Purana.

Conch

O Lord Nrsimhadev! May I always hear Your conchshell reverberating within my heart sounding its message: 'My devotee will never be vanquished!' O Conchshell, at Kuruksetra when the Pandavas heard you, they regained their strength and fought lust like lions. Please give me the strength to be determined in the battle against Maya.

Club

O Lord Nrsimhadeva, the elephant of sinful lust has entered the garden of my devotion. My Lord, please use Your club to chastise this elephant and drive him away.

Shield

O Lord Nrsimhadeva! I surrender to You. Please protect me with Your shield and give me your mercy.

Cakra

O Lord Nrsimhadeva! My rascal mind produces many such magical illusions, and like a ruffian he shouts cruel slogans like 'Go ahead! You can enjoy. Forget about Krsna and your guru. Just be natural, be yourself.' Please scatter these mystic illusions with Your sudarsan cakra and fix my mind on Your lotus feet.

Lotus

Lord Nrsimhadeva! Please touch me with Your padma so that the lotus bud of my consciousness will unfold and bloom with brilliant sattvika ecstasies in devotional service. By seeing your lotus flower, O Lord Nrsimhadeva, please increase the greed for nectar in my bee-like mind. As bees live inside a lotus flower, may the bee of my mind always be sheltered in your padma.

Sword

O Lord Nrsimhadeva, as a king immediately takes out his sword to protect the citizens from irreligion and sinful deeds, please be ready at any moment to protect me from acting sinfully. My mind is extremely sinful and lusty - being sometimes happy and sometimes distressed, so please, O Lord Nrsimhadeva, cut out with Your sword the roots of sin and protect the tiny creeper of Bhakti we are trying to grow there."

Front Two Hands

Lord Nrsimhadeva, You are the deliverer and protector and You are very affectionate to Your devotees. Once, in ecstatic affection, You picked up Prahlad, put him on Your lap and placed Your lotus hand on his head.

Prahlad's Teaching by Famous Pair

Song: Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo
Movie: Teesri Kasam
Singer: Mukesh
Actor: Raj Kapoor

Video

Sajan re jhoot mat bolo
Khudaa ke paas jaana hai
Na haathi hai na ghoda hai
Wahan paidal hi jaana hai
Sajan re jhoot mat bolo...

Sweetheart, don't tell lies
Because eventually, you'll have to show your face before God
There are no elephant or horse carriages up there
You can only walk there
Don't tell lies sweetheart....

Tumhaare mahal chaubaare
Yahin reh jaayenge saare
Akad kis baat ki pyaare
Yeh sar phir bhi jhukaana hai
Sajan re jhoot mat bolo, khuda ke paas jaana hai

You may have big palaces now,
But you will have to leave those here
Why do you bother to hold up your ego in pride
When you eventually will have to bow your head
Sweetheart, don't tell lies; you will eventually have to face God.

Bhalaa kije bhalaa hoga
Buraa kije buraa hoga
Wahi likh-likh ke kya hoga
Yahin sab kuch chukaana hai
Sajan re jhoot mat bolo, khudaa ke paas jaana hai

If you are good, then you will be rewarded.
If you are bad, then bad will come back to you.
What's the point in keeping track of these matters now
When you have to eventually pay your dues
Sweetheart, don't tell lies; you will be facing God someday

Ladakpan khel mein khoya
Jawaani neend bhar soya
Budhaapa dekhar roya
Wohi kissa puraana hai
Sajan re jhoot mat bolo khuda ke paas jaana hai

I spent my childhood playing
My youth was spent sleeping
And old age saw this and cried
That this is the same old story
Sweetheart, don't tell lies; you will have to come before God some day.
