Chyavan Rishi and Prahlad

After the Narsinh incarnation of Lord Vishnu killed the demon Hiranyakashyap, Prahlad was blessed to be the king of the demons until the end of the manvantara.   Once, when Chyavan Rushi went to bathe in a lake, some demons captured him and took him to Vaasukinaag, the serpent king of the netherworld. Due to his prayers, the serpent's deadly poison had no effect on Chyavan Rushi. However, Chyavan Rushi was unable to free from Vaasukinaag's grip.

When Prahlad saw Chyavan Rushi, he made a deal that if he was allowed to accompany the sage on a pilgrimage, the sage would be released. (Prahlad, though a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu, was born into an asura (demon) family. Because of this, he was unable to visit the holy places of Mrutyulok.)

Chyavan Rushi happily agreed to go on the pilgrimage.

How Indra Got his Kingdom Back from Hiranyakashipu

Sage Saubhari had once told Yudhishthir---

Once, Narad and Parvat were travelling through an aerial route, while they were flying over Khandav forest, they were lured by the beautiful sight of river Yamuna. They decided to take rest for a while. Both of them descended down and entered river yamuna to take their bath.Meanwhile, King Shibi who ruled over Ushinar saw them. He eagerly waited at the bank of Yamuna. When Narad and Parvat emerged out of the yamuna, they found king Shibi eagerly waiting for them. Meanwhile king Shibi had noticed the remains of numerous 'havan-kundas' (oblation-altars) spread in a large area.

After the formal exchanges of pleasantaries were over, King Shibi asked Narad about those havan- kundas.

Narad replied--During ancient times Indra had performed numerous Yagyas at this place to express his gratitude to Lord Vishnu, with whose blessings he had regained the heaven from the clutches of Hiranyakashipu. In course of time, this place became famous as Indraprastha. This sacrosanct place is holier than all the holy places combined together. Indraprastha is spread in the area of one yojan from east to west and four yojans from north to south.

Yagna

Puri is known as Nrisimha Kshetra

Nrsimha Kshetra: According to Skandha Parana jagannathPuri is known as Nrisimha Kshetra.

King Indradyumna, after finishing Sri Mandir's construc¬tion, went to Brahma-loka to invite Lord Brahma to the temples inauguration. Lord Brahma performed the yajna. From that yajna kund a fearsome form of Lord Nrisimhadeva appeared. The Lord wore a seven-hooded Ananta naga on top of His head and held Laxmi Devi in His lap. King Indradyumna was frightened of this form of the Lord. Being merciful upon the king, the Lord immedi¬ately accepted a peaceful form of Lord Narayana.

Extra Month

Why is it Called Purushottam Month?
a) Lord Sri Krishna is Purusottama, and it is the Lord’s favorite month.
b) As Krsna is the supreme among all incarnations, Purusottama is the supreme among all months.
c) It is the holiest month, far superior to the pious months of Magha, Vaisakha and Karttika.
d) Purusottama month is worshiped all over the universe by devotees, sages, demigods and even Laksmi Devi Herself.
Why is it called Adhika Masa (“the extra month”)?

1. It is an extra month of the year as per the Lunar Calendar.
2. The Vedic calendar is a lunar calendar and is based on the cycles of the Moon.
3. Also because Sri Krsna has placed all His potencies, mercy, blessings in this month.

Do you know why it is also called the “Mala Masa” (“the polluted month”)? Because the performers of karma-kanda cannot get any material fruitive results from their worship during this month, they call it so. Only works of devotion (Krsna-bhakti) give results in Purusottama month.
GLORIES OF PURUSHOTTAM MONTH from Padma and Skanda Puranas

1) Lord Sri Krsna: “Purusottama month has all the power I have to bless its observer. One who follows Purusottama vrata will destroy all his past sinful reactions. Without performing Purusottama vrata, one cannot perform pure devotional service. The value of Purusottama month is far more valuable than all other types of austerities and religious activities mentioned in the Vedas. Anyone who observes Purusottama vrata will return to my abode, Goloka, at the end of his life”.
2) Durvasa Muni: “Just by bathing in a holy river during Purusottama month, one becomes sinless. The glory of all other months is not equal to one-sixteenth of the glory of the Purusottama month. By bathing in a holy place, giving charity and chanting the Holy Name of Krsna during Purusottama month, all miseries are destroyed, one attains all kinds of perfection and fulfills all his desires”.
3) One Purushottama vrata equals a thousand Kartika vratas.
4) Valmiki Muni: “By observing Purusottama vrata, one attains more benefit than performing one hundred horse sacrifices. All holy places live within the body of a Purusottama month vrati. Anyone who faithfully performs Purusottama vrata will go to Goloka Vrndavana”.
5) Residence in the holy dhama in Purusottama month yields 1000 times the benefit.
6) Naimisaranya Sages: “Merciful Purusottama month acts like a desire tree to fulfill a devotee’s desire”.
7) If one sincerely worships Radha and Krsna in Purusottama month, he will attain everything.
8) One who observes Purusottama vrata, will burn up the reactions of all his bad karma and attain the direct service of Radha and Krsna.
9) Purusottama month is the best month for all spiritual advancement because Krsna overlooks all the aparadhas.
Vrata
How to follow the Purushottama Vrata?
1) Keep celibacy for one month. (Sleep on the floor – optional).
2) Bathe daily before sunrise (best in a holy place, or at least 3 days in a month).
3) Chant Hare Krsna Mahamantra and meditate on Krsna’s forms, qualities and pastimes. Daily chant extra rounds: 24, 32, or 64 rounds.
4) Daily offer ghee lamp to Radha-Krsna Deities or picture. 33 lamps daily or at least 1 day in the month.
5) Daily offer aratika and perform parikrama around Tulasi Devi.
6) Daily perform parikrama around the temple (4 times).

10) Take a vow to remain peaceful and truthful throughout the month.
11) Be careful not to blaspheme any devotees, brahmanas, saints, cows, sastras or people who follow this vrata.
12) Try your best to please Radha and Krsna by performing devotional austerities according to your abilities.
13) Eat on leaf plates sitting on the floor (optional).
14) No cutting of hair or nails (optional).
15) No cooking in oil or rubbing of oil on your body.

18) Hari-bhakti-vilasa: “During Purusottama month, one should remember Lord Krsna and then donate thirty three milk cakes cooked in ghee to grhastha brahmanas, who are well versed in sastras. Failing to do so, one loses all the piety he accumulated in the previous year.”
19) Recitation of the following mantra of Kaundinya Muni is recommended:
govardhana-dharam vande, gopalam gopa-rupinam

21) Bhaktivinoda Thakura: Perform the Nirapeksa Vrata, which means 30 days of concentrated, one-pointed worship and service to Radha-Govinda by

  1. hearing,
  2. chanting,
  3. remembering Their divine names, forms, qualities, pastimes.
  4. All day and night, hear about Bhagavan Sri Krsna, chant the Hare Krsna Mahamantra,
  5. take only mahaprasada.
Actions
  1. If you ate fruits, ghee, rice, wheat etc, donate the same to brahmanas.
  2. If you slept on the floor, give a bed and pillows to a brahmana.
  3. If you ate on a leaf plate, feed brahmanas with ghee and sugar.
  4. If you didn’t cut nails or hair, donate a mirror to a brahmana.
  5. If you offered ghee lamps, give new lamps and pots to a brahmana
  6. ********If you broke any rules or regulations during Purusottama vrata, feed different sweet juices to brahmanas.

******Mahadeva Lord Siva says that the best charity is to: "Fill a bell metal pot with thirty malpuas (a pancake like sweet), bind the pot with seven new threads and give to a worthy brahmana."

Comment:
Many humble niskincana Vaisnavas have no money or sufficient wealth to donate substantially to brahmanas. But according to your means, donate some small laksmi or some new object to a qualified person, begging for his mercy and blessings. And in your mind, (manasi-seva), you can sincerely donate generously to many good devotees. Remember that sastras say,  bhava grahi janardana, Bhagavan Sri Krsna is pleased with the purity and sincerity of one’s attitude, mood of love and purity of purpose. Try your best to break your vow by donating something within your means.
Breaking the vrata

1. Day and Time: consult local calendar.
2. Bathe in brahma-muhurta time
3. Perform Deity Worship: Radha-Syamasundara Deities, personal Deities or Picture.
4. Chant this mantra: "O Supreme Lord, O Sanatana, O Purusottama,
O Lord Hari ! I offer my obeisances unto you. May you and your beloved Radhika, please accept my offerings. I offer my repeated obeisances unto Syamasundara, who wears effulgent yellow garments on His beautiful body.
5. Offer puspanjali (handfuls of fresh fragrant flowers or petals) and then dandavat obeisances to Radha-Syamasundara Deities, your personal Deities or Picture.
6. Feed and give charity to 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 brahmanas/ Vaisnavas to the best of your ability (e.g., new clothes, two pairs of shoes, umbrella, ghee, yogurt, gumsas, sweets, lotas, plates: and and then equal value in Laksmi or money.
********The best charity is to give a Srimad Bhagavatam to a qualified grhastha vaisnava brahmana. This act will deliver all your ancestors to the spiritual world and award them the association of Lord Purusottama!

http://vedabase.net/sb/7/5/19/en

Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.19 speaks about catustayam—the four diplomatic principles

SAM NEETI : The basic and first approach of motivation speaks about explaining the way work is done, may be through Standard operating procedure or verbal communication. When we detail the work, person gets deeper knowledge and develops interest as well. We need to listen and understand their problem, convince them about management perspective. Solutions can be worked out to complex problems through negotiations. Sometimes expertise from external or internal agency also can help.

DAM NEETI: Employees work for money & money is one of the prime factor, acts as catalyst. Chanakya suggested rewarding employees sufficiently in order to get the work done. Organizations decide to facilitate by cash or kind, depending upon the policy formulated. Piece rate system of wages is an example, which is a reality in almost all the organization for certain defined work, especially in case of labor intensive industries like textiles, leather etc.  Another live example is target based incentives scheme, where target may be sales volume, PBIT, productivity, machine efficiency. Award system, like best employee, most regular employee, long serving employee etc. all these fall under DAM NEETI.

DAND NEETI : Chanakya says “ King with rod becomes a terror. A king with mild rod is despised, king just with rod is honored”. Many employees may not show sign of improvement from above methods of motivations in spite of constant follow up.  If neither reward nor incentive brings them out of lethargy, punishment is stronger option, but need to be used very intelligently. Punishment is always prescribed for view to improve not to deteriorate (Ms Kiran Bedi proved that punished/ jailed persons should be molded  to improve), hence there are many ways of punishments like warning, show cause notice, suspension or salary cutting. Depending of level of irregularity, type of punishment needs to be used in view of maintaining discipline.

BHED NEETI: Much abused neeti, divide and rule, Chanakya says something very important. When no weapon works, then this the hard option, though not encouraged at all, it is final step.  It is concluded that employee and organization cannot work together and hence it is the best way for the benefit of both.  Parting is the only option left, else company can think of transferring to some other work area, which may not be very crucial. Government officers, mostly policemen or IAS officers often face transfer under this policy.

It is essential for a student who is going to be a ruler or king to learn the four diplomatic principles. There is always rivalry between a king and his citizens. Therefore,

  1. when a citizen agitates the public against the king, the duty of the king is to call him and try to pacify him with sweet words, saying, "You are very important in the state. Why should you disturb the public with some new cause for agitation?"
  2. If the citizen is not pacified, the king should then offer him some lucrative post as a governor or minister-any post that draws a high salary—so that he may be agreeable.
  3. If the enemy still goes on agitating the public, the king should try to create dissension in the enemy's camp,
  4. but if he still continues, the king should employ argumentum ad baculum—severe punishment—by putting him in jail or placing him before a firing squad.

The teachers appointed by Hiranyakasipu taught Prahlada Maharaja how to be a diplomat so that he could rule over the citizens very nicely.

Bhakt Prahlad & Holika

There was a mighty demon king named Hirnakashyipu who had won all the three worlds of heaven, earth and hell and had thus, become very proud. He assumed that he could defeat even Lord Vishnu with his valor. He went to the extent that he had enforced a law that everybody would worship him instead of gods and deities. However, his little son Prahlad refused to accept his commands and continued to worship Lord Vishnu with complete devotion. Infuriated by this defiance of his son, he ordered his soldiers to throw him down a hill. Praying fervently and having full faith in Lord Vishnu, Prahlad did not retract from his word. True to his faith, Lord Vishnu rescued him at the last moment.

Flustered by this news, Hirnakashyipu invoked the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon that she could walk through the fire unharmed to do away with his son. The wicked aunt agreed to the evil desires of his brother and entered the fire with her nephew Prahlad. However, the brother and sister had forgot that Holika could only enter the fire alone or she would perish. Thus, blessed by Lord Vishnu, the child Prahlad remained unharmed but Holika got burnt and died instantly.

Holi is thus celebrated to commemorate the death of the evil aunt, after whom the festival is named, and the new life granted to Prahlad for his devotion and faith.
